Prince Hendrikkade 73

Directly opposite Amsterdam Central Station is the St. Nicholas Basilica: an impressive brown-weathered building with a high dome and two towers. It is nicknamed 'Cathedral on the IJ'. The building was erected in 1884-1887 and has both neo-baroque and neo-Renaissance style elements. The interior was completely restored in 1999 and is particularly multicolored and richly decorated. On the west wall above the main entrance hangs a magnificent national monument from 1889: a three-manual organ by the famous German builder Wilhelm Sauer. In addition, downstairs there is a compact box organ by Henk Klop, consisting exclusively of wooden pipes, which is also used to accompany the singers. The acoustics of St Nicholas Basilica are phenomenal. Organ playing and choral performances benefit from the long, spatial reverberation that allows music to come into its own.
